Albert Chinualumogu Achebe – Things Fall Apart Free Online Research Papers Albert Chinualumogu Achebe was born on November 16, 1930 in a large village in Nigeria called Ogidi. His father was a Protestant missionary and he received an English education in his early childhood. Despite his background, he had a multicultural upbringing. This is due to the fact that the inhabitants of Ogidi still followed many ancient and traditional Igbo culture. Achebe attended the Government College from 1944 to 1947 and graduated from University College, Ibadan in 1953. While he was in college, he studied history and theology. After developing a profound interest in Nigerian cultures, he dropped his Christian name of Albert and picked up his native name of Chinua. Achebe was a founder of the Nigerian literary movement in the 1950’s. He wanted to help others learn that cultures in Africa were more than what meets the eye. He wanted to show that native Africans were not as primitive, language-less, and socially backward as Englishmen like Joseph Conrad displayed in literary pieces. In his response to Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Achebe published Things Fall Apart in 1959. Things Fall Apart depicts a man named Okonwo and his family. Okonwo is a wealthy warrior who strives to uphold his manliness and not show any amount of weakness. He feels disgraced by his father who died poor and of a shameful death. His main goal in life is to gain the power and wealth that his father never had. He finds his twelve-year-old son lazy and worries that he will one day become his father. Along the way, Okonwo gains a young boy whom he admires as a son. His biological son looks to him as an older brother. The boy eventually must be killed and starts the beginning of the demise of Okonwo. At the ceremony honoring a village warrior who has passed, Okonwo’s gun accidently explodes and the elder’s son is killed. This causes Okonwo and his family to go into exile for seven years. When they return, Christians have settled into their village and converted many of the villagers. In a desperate attempt to regain the strength Okonwo once had, he kills one of the Christian missionaries. He immediately realizes that the rest of his colony does not want to go to war and does not follow his steps to kill the other Christians. Believing his future fate will be much worse and feeling like nothing more than a disgrace, Okonwo commits the greatest sin. He is found by the village commissioners after hanging himself. Throughout the story, Okonwo strives for nothing more than masculinity. His want for this trait is in result of his feelings for his father. He wants to be on top of his father’s legacy and known as a greater man. His father was against war, he was extremely poor, and had a love of language. To Okonwo, he was a complete failure. Okonwo avenged his father by becoming a wealthy warrior. He gained respect in his village by defeating Amalinze the Cat in a wrestling match. When a member of the village is murdered in a nearby village, Okonwo is sent to retrieve a virgin and a young man from the wrongful village. The young man, Ikemefuna is sent to live with Okonwo, his three wives, and eight children. The boy soon becomes part of the family and shows much potential to be a strong warrior. Okonwo is very fond of him but does not show this. Weakness is his greatest fear. For him, to be weak is to be womanly. When Okonwo finds out that Ikemefuna is to be murdered in repentance for the woman who died in his own village, he is extremely upset. Although he does not show it, he considers Ikemefuna a son and is very distraught by his upcoming fate. He is told not to take part in the murder because of the bond that they share. When it comes time, Okonwo disregards the orders in order to show his masculinity. When his son finds out about Ikemefuna’s fate, he is very upset. This breaks Okonwo down inside and he goes into a depression. He feels weak and has no desire to eat. His daughter Ezinma brings him dinners and insists that he eat all of his food. Okonwo wishes that Ezinma was a boy. He thinks she has the â€Å"spirit.† His want for his favorite child to be male shows that he has a secret desire to have close bonds with his actual sons. He does not admit this because affection is another thing that Okonwo regards as weakness. He does not want Ezinma to be a boy because of her masculine traits, but he values their bond of sympathy and understanding. Okonwo finds out one morning that Ezinma is dying and he and one of his wives must send her with a priestess to Agbala, the Oracle of the Hills and Caves for healing. They are told not to follow. His wife immediately disregards these orders and secretly follows right away. Okonwo waits a little while before following. When he reaches the cave and find that they have not yet arrived, he returns home. After checking the cave several times, he finally finds his wife. He waits to follow in order to uphold his strength as a man. Being worried right away would show a feminine weakness that he refuses to posses. During the ordeal however, Okonwo finds that his wife posses an amount of strength and bravery for defying the gods to protect her child. At the funeral of a fellow warrior, Okonwo’s gun blows up and he accidently kills the warrior’s son. Because of this, he and his family are forced into exile for seven years. One of Okonwo’s wives questions him as to why they receive such a harsh punishment for an obvious accident. This forces Okonwo to finally mourn the death of his wife’s twins and wonders what crime they possibly could have committed. This shows that Okonwo is starting to come out of his shell, so to speak. It is apparent that he is not the brute uncaring man that he pretends to be. While in exile, Christian missionaries inhabit his homeland, and his mother’s native village where they are staying. He soon learns that his son has joined them and Okonwo is outraged. By not following suit with the village’s ways, he is disregarding his masculinity and being weak. It seems that his main reason for disregarding Christianity is that he would have to come to terms with killing Ikemefuna. He would lose his religious justice in doing so. When he returns to his village, Okonwo finds that his once war-like people have changed. Many of them have converted to Christianity and those who have not, are peacefully living alongside everyone else. When his son departs the family to live with the Christian missionaries, Okonwo shows no remorse. He is still striving to get back on top of power and importance. In doing so, he continues to preach the extremely violent qualities of true masculinity. He still shows that he refuses to acknowledge aggressiveness and pensiveness as anything other than gender related qualities, even though he has experienced situations opposite of his beliefs within himself and his wife. When some problems arise with members of the church, the villagers ceremonially burn the church down. Those who took part in the burning, Okonwo included, were arrested by church officials and beaten in prison. Once they are released the clan has an enormous meeting. While it seems that other members of the clan wish to make amends with the Christians, Okonwo still want to go to war. When a messenger of the Christians comes in to tell the villagers to disband the meeting, Okonwo slays him with his machete. Realizing at once that none of his clansmen are going to support his decision, he leaves. Later, church officials come to look for Okonwo and find that he has hung himself. Suicide is one of the greatest sins to the villagers and it shows an immense amount of weakness, the one thing that Okonwo feared all along. By killing himself, he attempted to stop others from viewing him as cowardly. He wanted to die on his own terms. At the end of the story Okonwo is just as unsuccessful as his father was. He died poor, weak, and shameful. By killing the messenger, he makes his last attempt to assert his manhood. When he realizes that his attempts are obviously futile, he gives up completely. Everything that Okonwo did was based on masculinity and strength. He never wanted to appear weak, but when he realized that his life would soon end and he was horribly like his father, he could not bear to go on. All along, Okonwo showed signs of his view of weaknesses but he suppressed them. In the end they got the best of him and finally broke him. Definition and Examples of Foreigner Talk The term foreigner talk refers to a simplified version of a language thats sometimes used by native speakers when addressing non-native speakers. Foreigner talk is closer to baby talk than to pidgin, says Eric Reinders. Pidgins, creoles, baby talk, and foreigner talk are quite distinct as spoken but nonetheless tend to be perceived as similar by those adult native speakers who are not fluent in pidgin (Borrowed Gods and Foreign Bodies, 2004).As discussed by Rod Ellis below, two broad types of foreigner talk are commonly recognizedungrammatical and grammatical.The term foreigner talk was coined in 1971 by Stanford University professor Charles A. Ferguson, one of the founders of sociolinguistics. Ungrammatical foreigner talk is characterized by the deletion of certain grammatical features such as copula be, modal verbs (for example, can and must) and articles, the use of the base form of the verb in place of the past tense form, and the use of special constructions such as no verb. . . . There is no convincing evidence that learners errors derive from the language they are exposed to.Grammatical foreigner talk is the norm. Various types of modification of baseline talk (i.e. the kind of talk native speakers address to other native speakers) can be identified. First, grammatical foreigner talk is delivered at a slower pace. Second, the input is simplified. . . . Third, grammatical foreigner talk is sometimes regularized. . . . In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the prophecy of three witches drives the noble Thane's ambition beyond that of morality. His relationships with others, his dignity, and his sense of self-worth are all sacrificed for the title of King. The witches' prophecy inflates Macbeth's ambition and ego, causing him to take destiny into his own hands. Happiness, however, did not foresee his gain and eventually ruin was all that found him. At the beginning of the play Macbeth was a dedicated soldier for Scotland and its King, Duncan. He risked his life fighting for honor and the King's favor. After the battle with Norway, where he proved himself so by wining for his country, the witches told him of his destiny. After their first premonition was proved to be true, the witches words of, "King hereafter" (1.3.) began to affect Macbeth's ego. He wanted to be King and after Malcolm was said to be the next heir to the throne, Macbeth felt the only way he was to be King was to murder Duncan. Even after his plan reported to his wife, the doubts were still there, but he pushed them aside and betrayed the King regardless. For even Lady Macbeth longed to be queen and saw the murder necessary. His ambition just grew and grew. With every new obstacle he faced, killing seemed to be the only option. The witches' prophecy even affected his relationships. At the beginning of the play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were extremely close they shared everything together. They loved each other and it was evident. After the murder of Duncan though Lady Macbeth began to feel remorse but the new King (Macbeth) made justifications for the action. From then on when Macbeth saw fit an action of malice the Queen was not to no of it. They isolated themselves from one another while Macbeth's own desire was tearing them apart. He also began killing people he respected as men and friends. When Banquo was told that he would be the father to a line of Kings Macbeth saw this as a huge threat to his well earned thrown. He hired men to kill him not thinking twice about it until the guilt made him mad. At one time he respected Macduff but now seeing him as a traitor he killed his wife and children with no remorse at all. He began to think of only himself and the throne that gave him no content.

But if they move to a new group, then they easily wish to change and copy the new styles. Kind of like following a fad. 5. Short memories†¦No I don’t mean their dumb or something, I mean they forget the past or let go of the past easier. They don’t hold grudges quite so bad. Filipino’s are not more family oriented than in other cultures, but what makes them Filipino’s is they think they are. No offense. But many people have strong relations with their families. I lived in a home for six months and had to listen to my Brother in law tell me how family oriented they are as he yells at his father, and puts down his dead mother. I watched as just about every male member of the family had girlfriends, and the wives knew and ran those girls out of town when they got pregnant. I watched families that lived across the street visit each other once a year. I had a Filipino tell me that my daughter (half Filipino isn’t Filipino enough to live in his house with my 2nd wife for a short time). So in any respect, I’m not say they are less family oriented, but that we all have our issues with getting along, and Filipinos are no more family oriented than other cultures. This is according to the yahoo answers dot com. Well I agree with these because most of the Filipinos come from poor families and they can survive any trials becsuse they are already used to it. They are already down, so they on;y way to go is up. In the Philippines the most common thing that is talked about is the government. This is because this is the largest contributor of the poverty in the Philippines. The government system in the Philippines is very un organized and very corrupt. That’s why youre not rich if youre not in politics.

Today, there are many educational institution are implementing different types of technology in order to enhance instruction of the teacher as well the learning efficiency of the students. It is believe that application of technology will definitely enhance instruction because these types of materials and apparatus are especially designed for education and instruction.The most visible form of technology today is the computer (Gallas, 1994). Unlike in the previous decades where teachers use the traditional blackboard and chalk to teach their middle school students, now most teachers are using computers to aid them in teaching their students. Basically, computers are being implemented tod ay because there are some discussion when used by a blackboard and chalk, the student cannot understand the given lesson.Most educational institutions believe that there is a need to include in their academic curriculum the subject information technology and one example of this is the usage of computers. The above discussion shows why teachers use computer while this part of the paper will analyze why is there a need to include computer related subjects in the curriculum of middle school classrooms (Technology Education Association, 2000).Computers that are being used by math teachers, uses software that has connection is teaching math subjects (Harlen, 2001). This software is designed to teach math lesson and techniques in such a way that it will not create confusion on students. In solving math problems, the first thing to do is read the problem and determine what are the given. After this, the solver must find out what is being asked from the problem.Some math problems have obvio us statement where the solver can detect it with ease while there are also other math problems that do require and analysis first before knowing what is being asked. The next part will be the most difficult one because the solver will determine what equation or group or equations will be use to answer the math problem. This part does require some analysis (AutoSkill, 2003).The very reason why students are advised to take computer subjects is that, computers are now considered basic necessity in our society (Education Development Center, Inc.,2000). Almost every person in the country has computers. Moreover, all business transactions use computers. Thus, to prepare them in their chosen career, they will not be left behind due to their illiterateness in computer hardware and software.InternetInternet is being introduced today in most middle schools. The use of internet for education purposes is called electronic education or simply e-learning. The teacher may teach his or her students wherever and whenever.This is also applicable when the teacher wants also to give exercise and examination. The good thing with the use of internet is that, it does not need the student to go in the classroom just to learn the lesson. What is needed is a set of computer that has an internet connection (Technology Alliance’s Technology in Education Task Force, 1998).FACTORS OF TECHNOLOGY DIFUSSIONThere are factors why technology is implemented in teaching method in a middle school classroom. One is that it is more efficient compared to the traditional setting of a classroom.We know that a typical classroom consists of tables where the students will sit for the rest of time of discussion and a blackboard and chalk where all the writings will be done, but when technology is implemented, the classroom will transform into more convenient environment that will aid students to appreciate what the teacher is discussing.Computers will create an excitement among students because they will not feel bored in the discussion. Wilfred Owen It could be said that all of war poet Wilfred Owen 's work has a discernible purpose; this being the destructive capacity of war, and its ultimate futility. What remained constant throughout Owen 's career as a war poet was his ability to communicate his purpose successfully to the reader, through his style and technique. Some of his poems like Dulce et decorum est demonstrate Owen 's initial purpose in protesting against the war by means of definitive style and technique. In poems like Futility and Spring Offensive Owen 's purpose is centred around conveying to the reader the abnormality of war, his style and technique consolidating this purpose.Within Owen 's early poetry his purpose can be found easily, as much of the intended meaning lies on a surface level. Anger and disgust were the fundamental sentiments that permeated these poems, his intent; to reprimand those at home who ignorantly urged the doomed soldiers on to war.Owens Park Tower and Beetham Tower from BurnageA poem who se style and technique largely illuminate this purpose are Dulce et decorum est. The title is ironic, a Latin mantra used during the war to tempt soldiers into battle, roughly translated into 'It is noble to die for one's country.' Owen mocks this concept during the poem, ultimately rendering the notion of patriotism injurious and detrimental to man. This was intended to shock civilians at home, who were convicted that war was in fact noble and glorious. Continuing, Owen seems to look back on the event as it were a recurring nightmare, the ' haunting flares ' of the Five-nines foreshadowed by the haunting image of his dying friend. Mean, Median, and Mode - Measures of Central Tendency Measures of central tendency are numbers that describe what is average or typical within a distribution of data. There are three main measures of central tendency: mean, median, and mode. While they are all measures of central tendency, each is calculated differently and measures something different from the others. The Mean The mean is the most common measure of central tendency used by researchers and people in all kinds of professions. It is the measure of central tendency that is also referred to as the average. A researcher can use the mean to describe the data distribution of  variables measured as intervals or ratios. These are variables that include numerically corresponding categories or ranges (like race, class, gender, or level of education), as well as variables measured numerically from a scale that begins with zero (like household income or the number of children within a family). A mean is very easy to calculate. One simply has to add all the data values or scores and then divide this sum by the total number of scores in the distribution of data. For example, if five families have 0, 2, 2, 3, and 5 children respectively, the mean number of children is (0 2 2 3 5)/5 12/5 2.4. This means that the five households have an average of 2.4 children. The Median The median is the value at the middle of a distribution of data when those data are organized from the lowest to the highest value. This measure of central tendency can be calculated for variables that are measured with ordinal, interval or ratio scales. Calculating the median is also rather simple.  Let’s suppose we have the following list of numbers: 5, 7, 10, 43, 2, 69, 31, 6, 22. First, we must arrange the numbers in order from lowest to highest. The result is this: 2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 22, 31, 43, 69. The median is 10 because it is the exact middle number. There are four numbers below 10 and four numbers above 10. If your data distribution has an even number of cases which means that there is no exact middle, you simply adjust the data range slightly in order to calculate the median. For example,  if we add the number 87 to the end of our list of numbers above, we have 10 total numbers in our distribution, so there is no single middle number. In this case, one takes the average of the scores for the two middle numbers. In our new list, the two middle numbers are 10 and 22. So, we take the average of those two numbers: (10 22) /2 16. Our median is now 16. The Mode The mode is the measure of central tendency that identifies the category or score that occurs the most frequently within the distribution of data.  In other words, it is the most common score or the score that appears the highest number of times in a distribution. The mode can be calculated for any type of data, including those measured as nominal variables, or by name. For example, let’s say we are looking at pets owned by 100 families and the distribution looks like this: Animal  Ã‚  Ã‚  Number of families that own it Dog:  60Cat:  35Fish: 17Hamster: 13Snake:  3 The mode here is dog since more families own a dog than any other animal. Note that the mode is always expressed as the category or score, not the frequency of that score. For instance, in the above example, the mode is dog, not 60, which is the number of times dog appears. Some distributions do not have a mode at all. This happens when  each category has the same frequency. Other distributions might have more than one mode. For example, when a distribution has two scores or categories with the same highest frequency, it is often referred to as bimodal.
